A baseplate two-post car lift connects the columns using a steel plate across the floor. The hydraulic lines and equalization cables are protected inside this plate instead of running overhead. Since there is no top beam, a baseplate lift is an excellent option for garages with lower ceilings.

A clear floor two-post lift or bar on top as it is called routes its cables and hydraulic lines through an overhead beam. This leaves the floor between the posts completely unobstructed, allowing technicians and shop equipment to move freely beneath the vehicle.

The trade-off is height. A clear floor car lift requires greater ceiling clearance to accommodate the overhead structure.
